CHAMPIONSHIP GAME NOTES

Gonzaga had the most dominant run of any Old Spice Classic champion, winning its three games by an average of 14.3 points. Arkansas won in 2006 by an average of 8.0 ppg, and North Carolina State edged its three opponents by an average of 4.3 ppg in 2007.

The championship game of the Old Spice Classic featured two of the top three active coaches in career winning percentage (min. five years experience). Gonzaga’s Mark Few has won 80.0 percent of his games (241-60) to rank second among active coaches, while Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl stands third with a 78.7 mark (399-109). Roy Williams of North Carolina tops the list at 80.8 percent (566-134).

Tennessee was the second SEC team to play for the Old Spice Classic championship in three years (Arkansas won the inaugural event in 2006). The Vols have pushed the SEC’s record in the OSC to 6-2, most wins among any conference in this event.

TERMINOLOGY FOR NON-CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

The Old Spice Classic officially refers to the first three games on Sunday simply as Games 9, 10 and 11 of the tournament. The event no longer assigns positions such as 3rd place, etc., because of the complexity of the bracket.

2008 OLD SPICE CLASSIC SHATTERS ATTENDANCE RECORDS

The evening sessions of the 2008 Old Spice Classic have both drew sellout crowds. Friday’s second session attracted 4,658 fans, a tournament record and the largest crowd ever for any event at the Milk House, which opened in 1997. The average attendance for the entire weekend was 4,045, just shy of the 4,600 capacity and nearly double the average from 2007 (2,105).

NOTES AND RECORDS

Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas and Oklahoma State’s Byron Eaton both tied the Old Spice Classic record with 10 assists in a game (done four times overall)…The Spartans’ 94-point effort on Friday is the highest single game total in Old Spice Classic history.
